April 12, 2019: Today, the Trump Administration’s ban on transgender troops in the military went into effect. The ban is reminiscent of the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law, which was repealed in 2011, in that it allows transgender troops to serve as long as they do so as the sex they were assigned at birth rather than the gender they identify with.
The ban is arbitrary in effect, in that troops who were diagnosed with gender dysphoria prior to April 12 can continue to serve consistent with their gender identity; however, the ban will prohibit any future enlistees or current service members to serve consistent with their gender identity who have not yet been diagnosed.
PWN-USA condemns the implementation of this discriminatory ban. We will continue to stand with and fight for transgender service members and enlistees until this ban is defeated.
