Last night we learned about a leaked draft of the U.S. Supreme Court opinion that explicitly overturns Roe v. Wade, the momentous 1973 decision that guaranteed constitutional protections for abortion rights. It’s a horrifying and unprecedented confirmation that the Supreme Court is prepared to fully dismantle the rights of people who need abortions. 

It is also a draft opinion with no current legal authority. The law has not changed yet – abortion is still legal in the United States. PWN-USA will continue fighting to liberate abortion for all–will you join us?

The consequences of this draft opinion would be swift and devastating. Overturning Roe means abortion will be banned or severely restricted in 23 states, primarily in the US South. Tens of millions of people would immediately be deprived of control over their bodies and reproductive decisions. This will especially be devastating for Black, Indigenous, and other people of color, people with disabilities, people in rural areas, young people, undocumented people, and those having difficulty making ends meet.


That said, remember this is a draft opinion. It is not legally binding. We expect the Court to issue its official decision by June 2022.

Abortion care is healthcare but across the country, we are seeing abortion access rolled back with extreme bans and restrictions. PWN members and allies know what it’s like to fight impossible odds and we will be bold and relentless in our struggle for reproductive freedom.
